Spain in June: what to expect

June splits Spain in two. The first half behaves like late spring: comfortable city days, cool evenings in Madrid and Granada, and a Mediterranean sea that has warmed enough to swim. The second half tips into summer, and the inland south and centre start hitting the high 30s.

Rain is scarce almost everywhere except the green north, where Atlantic fronts still pass through. Daylight is at its longest of the year around 21 June, which is why June works so well for sightseeing: you can eat dinner at 22:00 in daylight and still walk home comfortably.

Coastal water is the deciding factor for beach plans. The Mediterranean and the Balearics reach swimming temperature in June; the Atlantic north stays bracing until July.

June is high season on the coasts and in the Balearics, and prices follow. Beach hotels, island ferries and car hire climb through the month, with the steepest jump after the third week, when Spanish schools finish and domestic holidays begin.

Cities are busy but manageable: Barcelona, Madrid and Granada see steady tour groups rather than August-level saturation. The green north is the exception — still comparatively calm and cheaper, even in high season.

Book coastal accommodation and any ferry to Mallorca, Ibiza or the Canaries by late April or May for the second half of June. Trains on the Madrid–Barcelona and Madrid–Seville high-speed lines sell out on Fridays and Sundays.

The month's fixed point is the night of 23 June, the eve of San Juan. Bonfires, fireworks and beach parties run along the Mediterranean coast and in Galicia, Asturias and the Canaries; Valencia, Alicante, Málaga and Barcelona all mark it. Expect packed beaches and late-night noise rather than ticketed events.

Corpus Christi processions fall in June in some years, with flower-decorated streets in places such as Toledo and Granada; dates move with Easter, so check locally. In Buñol, near Valencia, the town's big August festival is not a June event — do not plan around it this month.

Elsewhere June is a month of local fiestas rather than national ones: neighbourhood festivals, wine events and early summer fairs. Check the town hall calendar for the week you are there.

For a first trip, use the first half of June for the classic route: Madrid for 3–4 nights, then high-speed rail to Andalusia for Seville, Córdoba and Granada. Do it early — Seville and Córdoba regularly pass 35 °C by late June, and Granada's Alhambra involves a lot of walking in the sun.

From mid-June, move north or to the water. The Mediterranean coast and the Balearics are at their best: Barcelona, Valencia and the island resorts are warm without being punishing, and the sea is swimmable. The green north — San Sebastián, Bilbao, Santander, Asturias, Galicia — is the coolest option in the country and stays green and quiet.

The Canary Islands are mild but no longer at their winter peak; they work as a beach add-on rather than the main event in June.

Pack for heat with a cool evening layer. Inland cities cool down at night, and the north needs a light rain jacket and a warmer top. Sun protection matters more than you expect: June sun in Spain is strong from mid-morning, and queues at the Alhambra or the Sagrada Família are mostly outdoors.

Bring a refillable water bottle, comfortable broken-in shoes for cobblestones, and a hat. If you are heading to the north, add a compact umbrella. Beach plans need swimwear and reef-safe sunscreen; the Mediterranean is warm enough by mid-June.

May is arguably the best month in Spain: warm, long days, fewer crowds and lower prices, with Córdoba's patios festival. If your dates are flexible and you want cities rather than beaches, May beats June.

July turns up the heat and the crowds. Inland Andalusia and Madrid often top 40 °C, so July is a month for the north coast or the islands. August is Spain's own holiday month: coasts and islands full and expensive, Madrid half closed, heat at its worst inland.

April is excellent for weather and for Andalusia's festivals, but Holy Week and the April Fair push prices to the year's high.
