Spain on a budget: daily costs and money-saving tips

Spain is one of the cheaper big destinations in Western Europe if you copy how locals eat and move. The daily band above is per person, sharing a room at mid-range and above, and excludes flights, long-distance trains and big monument tickets. Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastián, Ibiza and the Balearics in summer sit at the top of every range; inland towns and Andalusia off-season sit at the bottom.

Food is where the savings are largest. A café con leche at a bar costs €1.60–2.80 and a caña €1.80–3.50. The weekday menú del día — three courses with bread and a drink — runs €13–18 and is the single best value meal of the day. Eat that at lunch, then take tapas or a supermarket picnic for dinner, and food drops to the €25–35 line in the budget tier.

Transport is cheap inside cities: a Madrid metro single is €1.50–2.00, and most cities have a 10-ride card that cuts the per-trip price. Between cities, advance high-speed tickets start around €25 on Madrid–Seville, while walk-up fares can reach €90. Buses are usually cheaper than trains on the same route.

Sights add up fast. Many museums are free in the last hours of the day or on set evenings, and the big monuments — Alhambra, Sagrada Família, Alcázar — sit on top of the sights line at roughly €20 and up. Flamenco shows run €25–45.

Book the long legs first. High-speed trains and domestic flights are the costs that swing most, and the cheap seats on each train sell out earliest. Once those are fixed, the daily spend is easy to control.

Shift your meals. Menú del día at lunch plus tapas or a market picnic at night is the standard budget pattern and saves roughly €15–25 a day against two restaurant meals.

Travel in the shoulder months. Late spring and autumn keep prices down and the weather workable across most of the country; July and August in the cities and islands are the worst value.

Pay in euros. Refuse the 'pay in your home currency' offer at terminals and ATMs; bank ATMs (Santander, CaixaBank, BBVA) often charge a fixed fee that the screen shows before you confirm.

Carry a little cash for village bars, markets and small rural shops, even though cards and contactless work almost everywhere in the cities.
