Airports in Spain: which one to fly into
Fly into Madrid (MAD) for central Spain and Andalusia by high-speed train, or Barcelona (BCN) for Catalonia and the Mediterranean coast. Use Málaga (AGP) for the Costa del Sol, and Palma (PMI) for the Balearics. Choose the airport that matches your first base, not the cheapest fare.

Details
Spain has four airports that most visitors use: Madrid Barajas (MAD), Barcelona El Prat (BCN), Málaga (AGP) and Palma de Mallorca (PMI). Each one anchors a different part of the country, so the choice follows your first base rather than the fare.
Madrid is the main hub and the natural entry point for central Spain and for Andalusia: the AVE high-speed train reaches Seville in about 2 h 30 and Málaga in about 2 h 40 from the city centre. Barcelona is the second gateway and the better pick for Catalonia, the Costa Brava and the Mediterranean coast; a plane from Barcelona to Seville takes about 1 h 40 if you want to combine both ends.
Málaga is the gateway to Andalusia and the Costa del Sol, useful if you want to start in the south without crossing Madrid. Palma de Mallorca serves the Balearic Islands and gets very busy in summer, when sailings and flights sell out. For the Canary Islands, fly from a mainland city: Madrid to the Canaries is about 2 h 40.
Once you land, the centre is usually reachable by metro, suburban rail (Cercanías in Madrid, Rodalies in Barcelona) or an airport bus. Allow 30–60 minutes and check which terminal your flight uses: Barcelona T1 and T2, and Madrid T4, are far from the other terminals.

Tips
Book the airport that matches your first two or three nights. Landing in Barcelona and immediately taking a train to Madrid adds half a day you could spend in either city.
If your trip is Madrid plus Andalusia, fly into MAD and leave the south by train; if it is Catalonia plus the coast, use BCN. For the islands, compare a flight from your arrival city with a ferry from Barcelona or Dénia — the ferry takes 7–8 h to Palma and 2–4 h to Ibiza.
Baggage rules differ between operators: low-cost Avlo and Ouigo trains charge for big bags, and airport buses and metro tickets are separate from rail tickets. Keep the airport-to-city leg in your budget.
Spain's seasons change what you pack and what you pay: see spain in winter, spain in spring and spain in summer before you fix dates.
