Southwestern Quebec is Montreal plus the ring of country around it: the Laurentian Mountains north of the St. Lawrence, and the small towns, farms and lakes of Montérégie and the Eastern Townships to the south. Montreal is the transport hub and the reason most people come; the rest is a weekend escape for Montrealers and works the same way for visitors. Sleep in Montreal for food, festivals and transit, and add one or two nights in the hills only if you want lakes, skiing or wineries.
