Southern Ridges Walk: route guide

Walk it west to east in 3–4 hours: Kent Ridge Park, HortPark, the Forest Walk and Henderson Waves to Mount Faber. Do it as a half-day, starting by 8am to beat the heat. Skip it if you want a full-day hike — it is a city park link, not a wilderness trail.

Route map and orientation

The Southern Ridges is a linked chain of four parks across southern Singapore: Kent Ridge Park, HortPark, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Mount Faber Park. Bridges and elevated walkways carry you over the highways between them, so you rarely deal with traffic.

The standard direction is west to east, from Kent Ridge MRT to HarbourFront MRT. It is not a loop, so plan your return from the eastern end. Labrador Nature Reserve sits south of the middle of the route and can be added as a detour.

Signage is good at junctions, but carry a phone map anyway: side paths branch off inside the parks and it is easy to drift onto a longer loop.

The stages

Kent Ridge Park is the quiet start: a small lake, a canopy walk and a stretch of WWII history at the top. From there a path drops through secondary forest to HortPark, a landscaped garden with toilets, a café and the best mid-walk break on the route.

The middle section is the reason most people come. The Forest Walk is a metal elevated trail through the canopy, and the Alexandra Arch leads into Telok Blangah Hill Park. From there the Henderson Waves bridge — a wave-shaped timber structure — crosses Henderson Road high above the trees.

The last climb goes up Mount Faber to Faber Peak, where you can ride the cable car down to HarbourFront or walk the stairs. If you still have energy, drop south to Labrador Nature Reserve for coastal paths and old bunkers.

  • Kent Ridge Park — lake, canopy walk, WWII markers
  • HortPark — gardens, toilets, café, easiest exit point
  • Forest Walk — elevated canopy trail
  • Alexandra Arch — road crossing into Telok Blangah Hill Park
  • Henderson Waves — the signature bridge
  • Mount Faber — Faber Peak, cable car, views over the harbour

When to go

Singapore is hot and humid all year, so the season matters less than the hour. Start at 7–8am: the exposed bridges and the Mount Faber climb get uncomfortable by mid-morning, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in every month.

February to April is often a little drier, and November to January wetter, but a downpour can arrive in any month. The walk stays open in rain; the boardwalks get slippery, so take it slowly on the metal sections.

Weekday mornings are the quietest. Weekends bring runners and families to Henderson Waves and Mount Faber, especially around sunrise and sunset.

When to go
WindowWhat to expect
7–9amCoolest, quietest, best light
10am–3pmHot and exposed on the bridges
4–7pmBusier, storm risk, good sunset from Mount Faber
NightPaths are lit in places but the canopy sections are dark; not recommended

Check the weather radar before you start; storms here are short but heavy.

Where to stay

There is no accommodation on the route itself. Most walkers base themselves near HarbourFront or Telok Blangah, which puts them at the eastern end with MRT, buses, malls and food courts on the doorstep.

Clementi and Kent Ridge suit an early west-side start, and are cheaper than the harbourfront hotels. Orchard and the city centre are 20–30 minutes away by MRT and work if you want nightlife after the walk.

Book ahead for weekends and public holidays; Singapore hotel prices rise sharply then. Hostels cluster around Bugis and Chinatown, both a short MRT ride from HarbourFront.

  • HarbourFront / Telok Blangah — closest to the finish, transport and food
  • Clementi / Kent Ridge — best for an early start at the west end
  • Orchard / city centre — more choice, 20–30 min by MRT
  • Bugis / Chinatown — hostel belt, easy MRT link

Preparation

Wear light clothing and shoes with grip; the metal boardwalks are slick when wet. Carry at least 1 litre of water per person, sun cream and a rain shell. There are toilets and water points at HortPark and near Mount Faber, but long gaps between them.

The route is free and needs no permit. Bring a stored map or offline app, and a charged phone for the cable car or ride-hailing at the end.

Monkeys appear around Kent Ridge and Telok Blangah. Do not feed them — it is illegal in Singapore — and keep food and plastic bags out of sight. Falling branches are a real hazard in the forest sections, so avoid sheltering under big trees in a storm.

  • 1 litre of water per person minimum
  • Grip shoes and a light rain shell
  • Sun cream and a hat for the bridges
  • Offline map or charged phone
  • No feeding monkeys; keep food hidden

FAQ

Questions people ask

How long does Southern Ridges Walk take?

About 3–4 hours at an easy pace for the full 10.5 km from Kent Ridge to Mount Faber, including photo stops. Add an hour if you detour to Labrador Nature Reserve or stop for food at HortPark.

When is the best time to do Southern Ridges Walk?

Start between 7am and 8am for the coolest, quietest conditions. Afternoon storms are common year-round, and the exposed bridges get hot by mid-morning. Weekday mornings are least crowded.

Where should I stay along Southern Ridges Walk?

There is no lodging on the route. HarbourFront and Telok Blangah put you at the eastern finish with MRT and food nearby; Clementi and Kent Ridge suit an early west-side start. Orchard is 20–30 minutes away by MRT.
