Turku riverside walk: route guide

Walk the downstream stretch from Turku Cathedral to the harbour (about 3 km (1.9 mi), 45–60 minutes) if you want cafés, restaurant boats and city life; continue upstream to Halinen and Vanhalinna only if you have half a day and want countryside. The full harbour-to-Vanhalinna loop is 28 km (17 mi) — that is a bike day, not a walk.

Map and orientation

The Aurajoki runs from the Port of Turku through the city centre and out into farmland upstream. The route described here follows the north-western (right) bank from the harbour, but every bridge is a chance to cross, so you can pick whichever side looks better on the day.

Downstream, the banks are city streets used as cycleways and footpaths, with most people commuting or heading somewhere. Around the centre they turn into a place to sit, drink coffee or take a beer on the restaurant boats. Upstream from the cathedral the character changes: gravel paths, boardwalks and small country roads, joggers and dog walkers, then fields and forest.

Coordinates for the city centre are approximate: 60.4518, 22.2666.

The stages

Treat this as two routes in one. The downstream section is a city walk you can do in an hour. The upstream section is a half-day or full-day outing, and beyond Halinen you are in countryside with few services.

The main route along the right bank — harbour via Koroinen, Halinen, Komosten kummut, Ristimäki and the forest to Vanhalinna, returning to Halinen via Virnamäki — is 21 km. Add 3 km to reach the cathedral through the Student Village, 500 m more for the market square or the restaurant ships, and 3 km to get back to the harbour: 28 km in total. That is a bike ride for most people.

A common bike loop is cathedral–Tuomaansilta–Koroinen–Halinen–Ristimäki–forest–Vanhalinna, returning by Kausela–Kohmo–Kurala to the cathedral: 11 km out, 10 km back. Going via Littoistenjärvi beach makes it 11 + 4.5 + 8 = 23.5 km.

Distances follow the main right-bank route; walking times are estimates for a steady pace with stops. Check café opening hours before relying on them.

When to go

The walk is a daytime route. Standard street sense is enough at night, but almost everything except restaurants and pubs closes in the evening, and you would miss the point of a riverside stroll. There is lighting along the river up to Tuomaansilta and a little beyond, and the main paths are lit as far as Halinen.

Late spring to early autumn is the comfortable window, when the outdoor tables and restaurant boats are running and the gravel paths have dried out. Off season the upstream cafés are mostly shut and may open only a few hours on some days even in season, so carry water and food if you go far.

Upstream paths stay wet longer after rain and some gravel sections are rougher than others, but the route never deteriorates into anything difficult. Beyond the Turku bypass the light pollution drops and you can see stars on a clear night; this is too far south for reliable northern lights.

Where to stay

Stay in the city centre if you want the walk on your doorstep: the stretch between the market square and the cathedral puts you at the start of both the downstream and upstream sections, with restaurants and the restaurant boats nearby.

If your trip is about the upstream route, the harbour end is convenient for ferries but adds 3 km to reach the centre. There is little accommodation along the river beyond Halinen, so plan to return to the city rather than stay out there.

Preparation

Wear shoes you do not mind getting muddy between autumn and spring, and carry a rain layer. Downstream you need nothing special. Upstream, bring water and snacks because services are sparse, and your own firewood if you want to use the barbecue sites across Vähäjoki from Koroinen or at the canoe quay below Halinen.

A bike makes the 21–28 km route realistic in a day; on foot, choose either the downstream or the upstream half. The route overlaps with several marked trails — the Suomen Sydän cultural history route from Åbo Akademi University, the Saint Henry pilgrimage route from the cathedral, and flora and prehistory routes between Halinen and Komosten kummut. Some information boards have English text.

  • Bring water and snacks for anything beyond Halinen
  • Firewood for the barbecue sites — none provided
  • Rain layer and shoes that handle mud
  • Bike if you want the full 21–28 km
  • Check café hours at Koroinen, Myllärintalo and Vanhalinna before setting out

Questions people ask

How long does Turku riverside walk take?

The city stretch from the cathedral to the harbour is about 3 km, or 45–60 minutes one way. The full main route along the right bank to Vanhalinna is 21 km, and harbour to harbour is 28 km — a bike day rather than a walk.

When is the best time to do Turku riverside walk?

Late spring to early autumn, when riverside cafés and restaurant boats are open and gravel paths have dried out. It is a daytime route: venues other than restaurants and pubs close in the evening. Carry your own food upstream off season.

Where should I stay along Turku riverside walk?

The city centre between the market square and the cathedral puts you at the start of both the downstream and upstream sections. The harbour is handy for ferries but adds 3 km to the centre, and there is little accommodation beyond Halinen.

Can I walk just part of the route?

Yes, and most people do. Bridges let you cross and switch banks at any point, so you can walk the city section, or start at the cathedral and go upstream as far as you like before turning back.

Are there cafés along the river?

Restaurants and cafés run all the way to the cathedral. Upstream they are sparse: Koroinen, Myllärintalo and Vanhalinna are the main ones, mostly closed off season and sometimes open only a few hours on certain days. Check before you rely on them.

Is the route suitable for cycling?

Yes. The 21 km main route and the 28 km harbour-to-harbour version suit a bike. A popular loop is cathedral to Vanhalinna and back via Kausela and Kurala at 11 km out and 10 km back, or 23.5 km if you detour via Littoistenjärvi beach.
