The Southern Province runs along Sri Lanka's south coast from Bentota east past Matara and Hambantota, with dry-zone country inland around Tissamaharama and Yala. Towns sit 20–60 minutes apart on the coastal railway and the Galle Road. Changing hotels every night costs more in transfers than in room rates. Sleep in Galle Fort for history and food, in Unawatuna, Mirissa or Weligama for the beach, in Tissamaharama for Yala. Day-trip the rest by train or bus.

- Galle to Mirissa to Tissamaharama in one day is four hours of road for two hours of beach.
- The sea is dangerous outside the flagged season: rip currents at Unawatuna and Mirissa take swimmers most years. Swim between flags, near lifeguards.
- Yala access can be restricted at short notice; check current park opening and permit rules before you book a jeep.
- Monsoon flips the coast: the southwest is wet from May to September, the southeast dry zone is wet from October to January.
