The Southern Highlands is a cool-climate cluster of villages 10–30 minutes apart, 80 minutes southwest of Sydney on the Hume Highway. Trains reach Bowral, Mittagong and Moss Vale, but the gardens, waterfalls and wineries sit off the line, so a car decides what you actually see. Two nights is enough for a weekend; one night only works if you drive straight through.
