Southern Armenia is one north–south highway with everything hanging off it: wine country and Noravank in Vayots Dzor, then Sisian, Goris, Tatev and the cave towns in Syunik. Buses cover the highway towns, but almost every sight is off it, so a car with a driver is the practical unit of travel. Sleep in one or two towns and fan out.

Public transport sticks to the highway. Without a car, Tatev, Noravank, Khndzoresk and Jermuk each need a taxi or a tour.
Ughtasar petroglyphs sit above 4,000 m and are only reachable roughly July–September; snow patches persist year-round and nights are cold even in August.
Mozrov and Arjeri caves have no lights, markers or facilities; go with a guide who knows them.
Do not hike close to the Azerbaijan border without checking locally first.

Vayots Dzor and Syunik: Mountain elevation keeps it cooler than Yerevan; spring and autumn are the walking months, July–August is hot in the valleys, and the passes see snow from late autumn.

Areni and Yeghegnadzor run a few degrees warmer than Goris and Sisian; the far south around Meghri is lower and milder in winter.
