Southern Alberta runs from prairie ranch country to badlands to the Rockies foothills. Two fossil sites, Dinosaur Provincial Park near Brooks and the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller, sit 177 km apart and each wants a day or two, so plan three days minimum if both are on your list. Calgary is the transport hub; Lethbridge and Medicine Hat work as cheaper southern bases.

  • Dinosaur Provincial Park's fossil beds are tour-only in summer; turn up without a booking and you may see the visitor centre and little else.
  • Prairie and badlands distances are long with few services between towns — carry water and fuel up before leaving the highway.
  • Chief Mountain (Waterton to Montana) closes Oct 1 to May 14; the other Montana crossings keep shorter seasonal hours, so check before a border run.
  • Chinook winds can swing winter temperatures by 20 °C in a day; roads stay icy in the shade.

Bags between cities

No rail link across the region; a rental car is the practical way to move between bases, and one-way drop fees apply if you pick up in Calgary and return elsewhere. Buses (Red Arrow, Mountain Man Mike's) run limited weekly routes and stop in towns, not at trailheads.

Semi-arid: hot, dry summers and cold winters with chinook warm spells. Badlands and prairie towns are exposed — carry water and sun cover. Mountain parks at the west edge are cooler and wetter.

July and August are the reliable months for park tours and lake cruises; late July brings Vul-Con to Vulcan.
