Southeastern Anatolia is Turkey's most Middle Eastern corner: Kurdish, Arab, Turkish and Syriac communities, two great rivers, and the world's oldest known temple. Cities sit 2–4 hours apart by bus or dolmuş, so pick one or two bases and day-trip. Gaziantep is the food and transport hub; Mardin is the stone-built hill town; Urfa is the pilgrimage and Göbeklitepe base. The far southeast near Şırnak and Hakkari needs a security check before you commit.
