Weather in May
May is the transition month between South Korea's dry spring and the late-June monsoon. Seoul, Incheon and Suwon typically see daytime highs around 20–25 °C and nights near 12–15 °C, with a handful of rain days rather than a wet pattern. Fine dust that peaks in March and April usually eases, though a hazy day can still appear.
Busan, Gyeongju and the south-east coast run a degree or two milder and are the most reliable region for beach-adjacent walking. Jeju is windier and wetter than the mainland; the island takes the first hit of most typhoons, but May is well before that season. Gangwon and the east coast — Sokcho, Seoraksan, Gangneung — stay cooler, so a mountain day needs a jacket even when Seoul is warm.

Crowds and prices
May is peak domestic travel season. Children's Day on 5 May fills amusement parks, zoos and palaces with families, and Buddha's Birthday week brings lantern events and temple crowds. Weekends through the month are busy in Seoul, Gyeongju and on Jeju; weekdays are noticeably calmer.
Prices track the crowds. Seoul hotel rates in Myeongdong and Hongdae run well above winter levels, and KTX seats on the Seoul–Busan line sell out for the first weekend of May. Book accommodation and long-distance trains as soon as your dates are fixed; a 2026 estimate for a mid-range Seoul double is roughly 120,000–200,000 KRW (about $90–150) per night, higher on holiday weekends.

Where to go in May
Seoul is at its easiest: palace courtyards, the Han River parks and Namsan walks are all comfortable, and the city works as a base for day trips. Busan and the south-east coast give you sea air and a milder climate, with the KTX making a Seoul–Busan split simple.
For mountains and coast in one trip, head to Gangwon: Seoraksan trails open up and Sokcho and Gangneung are pleasant before the summer beach rush. Jeju is green and walkable, though wind and rain are more likely than on the mainland. Inland, Jeonju and the surrounding North Jeolla region suit food-focused travellers.
If you have only a few days, keep it to Seoul plus one KTX hop rather than trying to cover the whole country.
