The 7-day shape is a straight line: land at Incheon (ICN), base in Seoul, ride the KTX south to Busan, fly out of Busan (PUS). One hotel change in a week, no backtracking, and the two cities that carry a first trip.
Everything else in the country — Jeju, Gyeongju, Jeonju, Seoraksan — sits off this line. Gyeongju is a two-hour detour from Busan by train or bus and is the only realistic addition, but it costs you a Busan night. See the 10-day route if you want it.

Day by day
Day 1 — Land and settle. Take the AREX from ICN to Seoul Station (43 min express, 60 min all-stop; 2026 estimate). Check in around Myeongdong for a first trip, or Hongdae if you want cheaper beds and nightlife. Eat something simple nearby and sleep off the flight.
Day 2 — The Joseon core. Gyeongbokgung in the morning, then Bukchon, Insadong and Jongmyo. The Royal Palace combined ticket covers four palaces and Jongmyo; Changdeokgung's Secret Garden is timed-tour only and sells out, so book online before you fly.
Day 3 — One day out. Either a DMZ tour (book ahead, passport needed) or Suwon for the Hwaseong Fortress walls, about an hour from Seoul by subway or train. Both are full days; pick one.
Day 4 — Seoul without a plan. Gwangjang or Mangwon market for lunch, a museum if it rains, Hongdae or Gangnam in the evening. This is the day that makes the trip feel like a holiday rather than a checklist.
Day 5 — KTX to Busan. Trains run roughly every 20–30 minutes from Seoul Station; book a seat a few days ahead for a weekend. Drop bags, then Gamcheon Culture Village and Jagalchi seafood market.
Day 6 — Coast day. Haeundae beach and the coastal train toward Songjeong, or Gwangalli at night with the bridge lit. If you would rather see Silla tombs and Bulguksa, take the train to Gyeongju instead and come back late.
Day 7 — Slow morning: Beomeosa temple or a Korean spa, then the airport bus to PUS. If your flight leaves from ICN, allow the KTX back plus the AREX, about four hours door to door.
Getting around
The KTX is the backbone. Seoul to Busan is about 2 h 30–3 h, roughly ₩60,000 one way in standard class (2026 estimate); SRT from Suseo is a similar price and time. Buy at Korail or SRT counters, machines or online — reserved seats, no need to arrive more than 15 minutes early.
In both cities the subway is cheap, frequent and signed in English. A T-money card works on buses, subway and taxis nationwide and saves fumbling for change. Taxis are metered and reasonable for short hops; Kakao T is the app locals use.
From ICN, AREX express is fastest to Seoul Station; the all-stop train is cheaper and only slightly slower. From Busan, PUS is on the metro line with an airport bus from Haeundae and Seomyeon.

Where to stay
Seoul: Myeongdong puts you on the subway with the airport bus outside the door and walking distance to the palaces — the easiest first-trip base. Hongdae is cheaper, younger and better at night. Insadong and Jongno suit anyone who wants quiet evenings near the old city.
Busan: Seomyeon is the transport hub, two metro lines and easy to the KTX station. Haeundae is the beach and the resort hotels. Gwangalli sits between the two with the bridge view and a good bar strip.
Book Seoul for four nights and Busan for three, and check whether your hotel holds luggage on the changeover day — most do. Hostel beds and business hotels both run cheaper outside cherry-blossom and autumn-foliage weeks.

A mid-range week — business hotel or good hostel, KTX, subway, two proper meals a day — lands around ₩1,100,000–1,700,000 per person excluding international flights (2026 estimate, roughly $800–1,250). Budget travellers using hostels and convenience-store meals can halve that; the KTX ticket is the one cost you cannot dodge.

Variations
Skip Busan and stay in Seoul. Seven nights in one bed, with Suwon, the DMZ, Gangneung or a Seoraksan overnight as day trips. Cheaper, no packing, but you see one city.
Add Gyeongju. Cut a Seoul night and a Busan night, spend one night among the Silla tombs, and continue to Busan. It works on the KTX line but the week gets tight.
Swap Busan for Jeju. Flights from Gimpo take about an hour, but the island needs a car and three nights minimum — that is a 10-day trip, not a 7-day one.
If you have more time, the 10-day route adds Jeonju and Gyeongju, and 14 days adds Jeju. Both are better value than stretching this week.
