South Estonia is the country's hill country: Tartu for museums and student nightlife, Viljandi for a castle hill and the July folk festival, Otepää for winter skiing, plus manors, sandstone outcrops and two national parks within an hour or two of each other. Buses and trains link the towns; smaller villages get a morning and a late-afternoon bus only, so plan around the last one.

Colder and snowier than the coast; Otepää holds snow for skiing most winters. Summer days are long, with light until late evening.

May to September is the walking season; July is warmest and busiest (Viljandi folk festival). Winter is for skiing at Otepää, not for sightseeing.
