South Dakota splits at the Missouri River. Almost everything you came for — Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Badlands, Wind Cave, Deadwood — sits west of it, spread across the Black Hills and the plains east of them. Rapid City is the practical base: airport, car rental, cheapest beds. From there, Mount Rushmore is a short drive, Custer State Park and Deadwood are longer, and the Badlands are a separate full-day loop east on I-90. Fly into Rapid City (RAP), rent a car, and give the west 3–4 nights.
