South Bohemia is a low, pond-and-forest region built by the Rožmberk family: two UNESCO sites, a river that runs through a castle town, and a flat belt around Třeboň that Czechs cross by bike. Trains and buses reach the main towns from Prague in 2–3 hours, but rural services thin out at weekends. Pick one base, add a second only if you are cycling or driving.

Regional buses are much thinner on Saturdays and Sundays; check the last return before you leave.
Rural roads are narrow and forested — deer and boar at dusk and at night are the real hazard.
In July the Vltava canoe stretch below Lipno is crowded; book canoes and campsites ahead.
