How to get to South Africa: airports, flights and border crossings
Fly into Cape Town (CPT) if the Western Cape and Garden Route are your trip; fly into Johannesburg (JNB) if you are heading to Kruger, Gauteng or connecting onward. Both have nonstop flights from Europe, the Gulf and elsewhere in Africa. Land borders work from Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Eswatini; cruise ships call at Cape Town and Durban.

Summary by airport, route and cost
Pick the airport that matches your itinerary, not the cheapest fare. A cheap ticket into Johannesburg plus a domestic hop to Cape Town often costs more in time than a slightly pricier nonstop into Cape Town. Fares swing with season: December–January and the July school holidays are the peak, May and September the softer shoulder.
| Airport | Best for | Typical nonstop from | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cape Town (CPT) | Western Cape, Winelands, Garden Route | Europe, Gulf, some African cities | Busiest Oct–Apr; domestic links to JNB and Durban |
| Johannesburg O.R. Tambo (JNB) | Kruger, Pretoria, Gauteng, onward Africa | Europe, Gulf, Asia, some US via hubs | Main long-haul gateway; 45–60 min to Sandton by road |
| Durban King Shaka (DUR) | KwaZulu-Natal, Drakensberg, iSimangaliso | Mostly domestic and regional | Useful if the coast is your first stop |
| Land border | Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho, Eswatini | n/a | Car, bus or rail; allow time at peak crossings |
| Sea | Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth | Cruise or cargo | Cruise calls are seasonal; check the line's schedule |
Flight times are estimates and vary by route and aircraft.
Step by step: choosing and booking
First, decide the shape of the trip. Cape Town plus the Garden Route means flying into CPT and out of CPT or Port Elizabeth. Kruger plus Gauteng means JNB in and out, or JNB in and a domestic hop to a Kruger gateway such as Mbombela or Hoedspruit. A two-week trip that does both usually flies between the Cape and Kruger rather than driving.
Second, check the connection. From the US, most routings go through Europe (London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt) or the Gulf (Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi), with a few options via an African hub. From the UK, nonstops to JNB and CPT run year-round. From Canada, expect one stop. From Australia and New Zealand, one or two stops via the Gulf, Singapore or Sydney.
Third, book the domestic leg early if you are connecting on arrival. A same-day international-to-domestic connection at JNB needs at least three hours; at CPT, two to three hours is safer. If you are unsure, overnight near the airport and fly the next morning.
Fourth, sort the paperwork before you pay. Check the visa rules for your passport, and confirm your passport has enough validity and blank pages. Travel insurance should be in place before you fly, especially if you plan to self-drive or hike.
- Fly into CPT for the Cape and Garden Route; JNB for Kruger, Pretoria and Gauteng.
- Allow 3 hours for an international-to-domestic connection at JNB, 2–3 at CPT.
- Compare a nonstop into CPT against a cheaper JNB fare plus a domestic hop.
- Book domestic safari-gateway flights early; small planes fill up in peak season.
- Check visa and passport rules for your nationality before booking.
Notes and things that change the plan
Season matters more than airline. December–January is the Cape's high summer and the busiest, priciest window; May–September is better for the bush but wetter in the Cape. Shoulder months, roughly April–May and September–October, usually give the best balance of weather and fares.
Land arrivals are practical if you are already in southern Africa. Crossings from Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Eswatini take cars, buses and in some cases trains. Allow extra time at peak holiday weekends, and check whether your nationality needs a visa for the specific crossing.
Cruise passengers arrive at Cape Town and Durban, mostly in the southern summer. If you are sailing in, the port is close to the city centre in Cape Town; in Durban, plan a transfer to the beachfront or the airport.
One rule that catches people out: many airlines and border posts want a passport valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended exit and with two blank pages. Children travelling on a parent's passport or without the other parent can face extra documentation requirements — check before you book.
| Month | Cape | Bush | Fares |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec–Jan | Warm, dry, busy | Hot, rainy | Peak |
| Feb–Apr | Warm, quieter | Warm, drying | Shoulder to high |
| May–Aug | Cool, wet | Dry, best game viewing | Lower |
| Sep–Nov | Warming, flowers | Dry, good | Shoulder |
Patterns vary by region; the Cape and the lowveld do not share a climate.
Questions people ask
What is the best airport to fly into for South Africa?
Cape Town (CPT) if your trip is the Western Cape, Winelands or Garden Route. Johannesburg O.R. Tambo (JNB) if you are heading to Kruger, Pretoria, Gauteng or connecting onward in Africa. Durban (DUR) suits KwaZulu-Natal.
How long is the flight to South Africa from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and NZ?
From the UK, nonstops to JNB or CPT run about 11–12 hours. From the US and Canada, expect one stop and 18–24 hours total. From Australia and New Zealand, one or two stops and a long travel day. Times are estimates (check).
Can I enter South Africa by land or sea?
Yes. There are road and rail crossings from Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho and Eswatini, and cruise ships call at Cape Town and Durban in the southern summer. Check visa rules for your nationality and the specific crossing.
Do I need a visa to enter South Africa?
It depends on your passport. Many Western nationalities get visa-free entry for short stays, but rules change. Check the official Department of Home Affairs guidance for your nationality before booking, and confirm passport validity and blank pages.
Which airport is cheaper to fly into, Cape Town or Johannesburg?
Johannesburg usually has more long-haul routes and can be cheaper, but add the cost and time of a domestic hop if the Cape is your destination. Compare the total, not the headline fare.
How early should I arrive at the airport for a domestic flight in South Africa?
Two hours is comfortable for domestic departures, and three hours for international. Security and bag drop at JNB and CPT can be slow in peak season.
