  • South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Bolivia ↗Visa rules depend on your passport (some nationalities need a visa in advance): check with Bolivia's migration authority or a Bolivian consulate.
  • Bolivia ↗Most of the tourist route is above 3,500 m: ascend gradually, rest on arrival, and see a doctor before travel if you have heart or lung conditions.
  • Bolivia ↗Protests and road blockades (bloqueos) are frequent and can close routes and cities for days; watch local news and keep plans flexible.

Sorata is a small valley town at about 2,700 m below the Cordillera Real, roughly 3–3.5 h from La Paz, and it exists for hiking. The town itself is a few market streets around a plaza; the reason to come is the trail network above it, Laguna Chillata and the longer Laguna Glaciar route. Accommodation is cheap and basic, Wi-Fi is rare, and most travellers stay 2–3 nights.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes; taxis wait near the plaza and are only worth it for trailheads or the caves. For trails, carry an offline map or GPS: paths split and people have been lost on the descent from Laguna Glaciar. OpenStreetMap-based apps cover the area.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Laguna Chillata

go

Door to door: Full day (3–4 h up)

Walk or taxi 7 km to Comunidad Pampa Colani, then follow the trail up

About 32 km return on foot; a taxi saves 1.5–2 h. Guided day hike around Bs 350 per group.

Laguna Glaciar

overnight

Door to door: 2–4 days

Same trail as Chillata, then continue higher

18 km, about 2,360 m of climb, tops out near 5,050 m. Camp gear needed; guide recommended.

San Pedro caves (Grutas de San Pedro)

caution

Door to door: 2.5–3.5 h each way on foot

Walk down the road from the plaza's northwest corner, or taxi about Bs 35–40

Entry about Bs 20 plus Bs 5 for the boat inside; short cave, dusty road walk, uphill back.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Around the plaza

Most guesthouses sit on the plaza corners; walk to everything, buses arrive and leave here.

150 m south of the plaza

Hostel strip with dorms and a bar; quieter than the plaza at night.

Below town (valley side)

Cabins with valley views, a short uphill walk back to the plaza; the priciest option.

Watch out

Safety

Sorata is a small, calm town and violent crime is rare; the real risks are altitude, getting lost on unmarked trails and road blockades on the La Paz route. Hike with a map or guide, and never rely on a phone signal above town.
  • Altitude: the town sits near 2,700 m and hikes climb to 4,000 m+; acclimatise in La Paz first.
  • Trails are unmarked in places and split on the way down: carry an offline map and set markers.
  • Wet season (Dec–Mar) makes trails muddy and hides the peaks.
  • Wi-Fi is rare in guesthouses; buy a Bolivian SIM or eSIM before you leave La Paz.
  • The 'tourist information' offices are tour operators and take a cut; agree the price in writing.
  • Roads to La Paz can be blocked by protests: keep a buffer day before a flight.
