Snellville

Skip as a base unless you have family or a specific errand here: one half-day for the memorial and a meal, then sleep in Atlanta or Stone Mountain.

Snellville is a Gwinnett County suburb of about 18,000 people, 35–40 minutes east of Downtown Atlanta on US 78. It has no sightseeing core, no walkable district and no public transport beyond one weekday commuter bus. Treat it as a suburban stop inside a Metro Atlanta trip, not a destination: a memorial, a shopping centre and a handful of long-running local restaurants.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is required. US 78 runs west to Stone Mountain Park and Downtown Atlanta and east to Athens; GA 124 links to Lawrenceville and the Mall at Stonecrest. The only public transport is the GA Xpress 419 commuter coach to Downtown Atlanta, weekday mornings inbound and afternoons outbound, no holiday service.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime suburb; the real risks are highway driving, summer heat and leaving valuables visible in a parked car. Standard US precautions apply.
  • No public transport inside the city: without a car you are stranded at your hotel.
  • US 78 and GA 124 are fast suburban highways with turn lanes and heavy commuter traffic at 07:00–09:00 and 16:00–18:30.
  • Summer heat and humidity: plan outdoor stops before 11:00.
  • The GA Xpress 419 runs one direction per time of day — check the timetable before relying on it.
