Step by step
First, decide which side of the country you are heading for. Bratislava and the west are easiest from Vienna; the High Tatras and Košice are easier from Budapest, Kraków or a direct flight to Košice. If you are doing the classic Bratislava–Tatras–Košice route, flying into Vienna and out of Košice (or the reverse) saves a long backtrack.
Second, book the airport-to-city leg. From Vienna, buses and trains to Bratislava run frequently and take about an hour; the bus is usually the simplest, the train drops you at the main station. From Bratislava airport, local buses reach the centre in about 20–30 minutes. From Košice airport, a bus or taxi reaches the centre quickly, and rail continues to Poprad and the Tatras.
Third, sort the paperwork. Slovakia is in the Schengen area, so if you are already inside Schengen there are normally no border checks on land crossings.
