The honest verdict

Skopje is compact but split in two by the Vardar river: the Ottoman Old Bazaar on the north bank, the rebuilt Macedonia Square and its statues on the south. The trips that go wrong walk the bazaar at 14:00 in July, arrive late without a booked transfer, or plan an outdoor week in a smoggy January. Four clusters cover a first visit: the Old Bazaar, Macedonia Square and the Stone Bridge, the Debar Maalo restaurant quarter, and Bit Pazar market. Ohrid is a separate base, not a day trip.

Budget day: MKD 1,500–2,500 excl. bed
Paying: Cards work in hotels, supermarkets and many restaurants; bakeries, bazaar grills, buses and taxis are cash. Carry MKD 50–500 notes.
Cash: Keep MKD 1,000 in small notes for bakeries, buses and taxis; withdraw at bank ATMs, not standalone machines.
SIM: Install an eSIM before you fly, or buy a SIM at a mobile shop in town (passport needed). EU roaming rules do not apply; check your plan.
