Know before you go

The bridge is about 214 m long with 12 arches and was built in the 15th century under Sultan Mehmed II (dates vary by source).
It is now pedestrian-only and the two halves of the city meet here: the Skopje 2014 statues on one side and the bazaar on the other.
The stone is smooth and can be slippery when wet; watch for cyclists and scooters.
Street vendors, musicians and portrait artists work the bridge in the evening; a polite no is enough.
The parapet is low: keep hold of children.
Sunset light and evening lights make dusk the best time; earlier in the day it is quiet.
