Sinop

Give Sinop two nights: one for the fortress, walls and harbour, one for Hamsilos or İnceburun. Skip it if you want nightlife or an easy inland route.

Sinop is a Black Sea peninsula town where the old walls still close off the isthmus, the harbour sits under a Genoese-era fortress, and the beaches and forest bays are a short dolmuş ride out. It fills with Turkish families from Istanbul and Ankara in July and August, and stays quiet the rest of the year. Two nights covers the town and one coastal day trip; three if you add Erfelek or Boyabat.

Get around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 25 minutes. Dolmuşes and taxis run to the otogar (6 km west) and the airport; dolmuşes also serve the beaches. Parking in the centre is hard in summer. There is no train.

The old-town strip: mansions turned hotels, 5–10 min on foot to the fortress and ferry wharf. Best for a first visit without a car.
Gelincik, west of the centre
Coastal hotels and the closest campsite, 1–2 km from the walls; quieter, some with their own beach.
East headland (Karakum)

  • The otogar is 6 km west of the centre: allow 20 min by taxi or dolmuş before a bus.
  • Winter brings strong Black Sea wind and rain; the sea is cold outside Jul–Sep.
  • Carry small lira notes: not every small café or dolmuş takes cards.

Sinop is a low-crime, easy-going town; the real issues are summer crowds, littered central beaches, sea currents on windy days and the long walk back from the otogar at night.
