Singapore in October: what to expect

October sits in the inter-monsoon, the transition between the drier southwest monsoon and the wet northeast monsoon. That means heat that does not let up — highs around 31–33 °C, nights near 25–26 °C — plus thunderstorms that build through the afternoon and can run into the evening. They are usually heavy and short rather than all-day rain, so a morning outdoors and an indoor plan for 3–5pm is the standard pattern.

Humidity stays high, and the UV index is extreme at midday. Haze is possible in October in years when fires burn in Sumatra and Borneo; it is not guaranteed, and it varies day to day. Check the PSI on haze.gov.sg before committing to a long outdoor day such as Pulau Ubin or the Southern Ridges.

October is one of the two most expensive months of the Singapore year, alongside December. The driver is the Formula 1 night race, which takes over Marina Bay for a weekend and pushes bay-view hotels to their annual peak; rooms elsewhere in the city rise too, and flights into Changi fill earlier than usual. If your dates overlap race week, book accommodation two to three months out and expect minimum-stay rules at some bay hotels.

Outside race week, October is busy but manageable: Deepavali lights bring evening crowds to Little India, and the school-holiday surge has not started. Hawker food, MRT fares and most attractions cost the same as any other month, so the price difference is almost entirely accommodation and airfare.

The headline is the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, a night race on a street circuit around Marina Bay. The 2026 dates are not confirmed here — check the official race calendar before booking, because the whole month's pricing moves with it. Expect road closures, packed MRT trains after the sessions and a party atmosphere in the CBD.

Deepavali falls on 8 November 2026, but the Little India street lights and the bazaar usually switch on in October, so evenings in that neighbourhood are lively through the month. Halloween events at the major attractions and in Clarke Quay are common in late October; check individual venue listings. The Hungry Ghost Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival both fall earlier, in September.

Plan around the rain rather than against it. Mornings are the best window for outdoor work: the Botanic Gardens, MacRitchie Reservoir and the Southern Ridges trails, or a walk through Kampong Glam and Chinatown before the heat peaks. Keep the afternoon for air-conditioned blocks — the museums at Bras Basah, the malls on Orchard Road, or the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay, which are covered.

For a full day out, Pulau Ubin and the offshore islands are best attempted early and with a weather check, since storms cancel boat trips and haze dulls the views. Sentosa works in almost any weather because so much of it is indoors or covered. If the PSI is high, skip the treetop walks and the zoo's open enclosures and shift to indoor attractions.

Light, quick-drying clothes and a compact umbrella or rain shell — you will use it most afternoons. One light layer is enough for air-conditioned malls and the MRT, which run cold. Bring high-factor sunscreen and a refillable bottle; tap water is safe to drink in Singapore, and refill stations are common.

Add mosquito repellent if you plan on parks, trails or Pulau Ubin, and a mask if you are travelling in a haze-prone year. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else: the city is best seen on foot, and pavements get slick in a downpour.

September is similar in weather and haze risk but cheaper, with no F1 premium. November turns wetter as the northeast monsoon sets in, though Deepavali on 8 November 2026 and the start of the Orchard Road Christmas lights make it a strong month for city time. December is the wettest month of the year and the most expensive for hotels.

If your priority is dry weather, aim for February to April instead: February is the driest month, and the rain is lighter through March and April than in October.
