Singapore in December: what to expect

Singapore sits almost on the equator, so December is not cold — it is wet. Expect roughly 25–33 °C day and night, high humidity, and the northeast monsoon at its most active. Rain usually arrives in heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle, but December is the wettest month of the year and spells can last for hours.

The practical effect is on plans, not on comfort. Outdoor blocks — the Southern Ridges walk, Pulau Ubin, Sentosa beaches, the Botanic Gardens — can be washed out for a morning. Indoor Singapore is excellent and dry: museums, hawker centres, malls, the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome. Build each day with one outdoor and one indoor option, and check the radar before leaving.

The monsoon also runs on the sea. Ferries to Batam and Bintan can be rough in December, and Bintan's north-coast beaches are unswimmable on some days.

December is peak season. Local school holidays, Christmas shoppers and year-end visitors land at the same time, so Orchard Road, Marina Bay, Sentosa and the malls are busy every evening and weekend. Hawker centres stay manageable; the queues move fast.

Hotel rates are at their highest of the year, especially around Marina Bay and Orchard, and the last week of December is the tightest. Book two to three months ahead for anything near an MRT line, and expect attractions such as Universal Studios Singapore to sell timed tickets out on peak days.

Flights in and out are also full in the final week, and 31 December brings road closures around Marina Bay plus packed MRT trains after midnight.

The month's anchor is Christmas. Orchard Road's light-up starts in mid-November and runs through December, with malls competing on decorations; it is free to walk and busiest after dark. Christmas Day, 25 December, is a public holiday: malls and many restaurants are packed, while some smaller shops and hawker stalls close for the day.

New Year's Eve closes the month with fireworks over Marina Bay on 31 December. Expect road closures, huge crowds on the promenade and full trains after midnight; book a bay-view table early or watch from a distance.

Chinese New Year falls in February 2027 (6–7 Feb, with 8 Feb in lieu — check), so its Chinatown bazaar does not overlap December. Deepavali lights in Little India come down in November.

Wet-weather days: the National Museum and National Gallery, the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay, the ArtScience Museum, and any mall on Orchard Road. Hawker centres such as Maxwell and Old Airport Road are covered and busy in the rain.

Between showers: the Botanic Gardens (free, and best in a dry morning), the Southern Ridges, Fort Canning, Kampong Glam and Chinatown on foot, and the Singapore River walk from Clarke Quay to Marina Bay. Sentosa and the beaches work on clear afternoons; Pulau Ubin needs a dry window and an early start.

For a first trip, base yourself on one island near an MRT line for 3–4 nights and treat December as an indoor-plus-short-outdoor month rather than a beach trip.

Light, quick-drying clothes for 25–33 °C and high humidity; a compact umbrella or rain shell that lives in your day bag; sandals or shoes that survive puddles; and a light layer for aggressive air conditioning in malls, museums and the MRT.

Add a refillable water bottle (tap water is safe to drink here), sun protection for the gaps between showers, and a small towel or dry bag for electronics on boat and outdoor days. Formal wear only if you have a New Year's Eve booking.

November is the wetter start of the northeast monsoon but cheaper and less crowded, with Deepavali lights in Little India on 8 November 2026. January stays in the monsoon, with rainy spells early in the month before it dries out, and New Year crowds on 31 December.

February is the driest month and a strong alternative if rain is your main worry, though Chinese New Year (6–7 Feb 2027) closes some stalls and fills flights. October is also busy and pricey because of the F1 night race (check dates).
