Day trip from Singapore to Sentosa: how to get there and what to do

Sentosa is a small island joined to the south coast of Singapore by a bridge, a monorail and a cable car. From almost anywhere in the city, the simplest route is the MRT to HarbourFront station, which sits under VivoCity mall. From there you have three ways across.

The Sentosa Express monorail leaves from level 3 of VivoCity and takes a few minutes to Beach Station and Imbiah. The boardwalk is a covered walkway from VivoCity to Resorts World Sentosa, roughly a 10–15 minute walk, and is the cheapest option. The Singapore Cable Car runs from Mount Faber and from HarbourFront Tower to Imbiah Lookout and gives you a view over the harbour, at a higher price.

By taxi or ride-hailing app, you can be dropped at Resorts World Sentosa or at the Beach Station area; expect a surcharge for entering Sentosa by car. Driving yourself means paying the same entry charge plus parking, and the island is small enough that you will not need the car once you are there.

Once on the island, buses and the Sentosa Express link the main stops, and most of the beaches and attractions are walkable from Beach Station or Imbiah.

A workable day starts early to beat both the heat and the queues. Leave the city around 08:30, reach HarbourFront by 09:00 and be on the island by 09:30.

Morning: pick one headline attraction. Universal Studios Singapore takes most of a day on its own. S.E.A. Aquarium is a two-to-three hour visit and pairs well with the rest of the island. If you would rather not pay for either, walk the Fort Siloso Skywalk and the Fort Siloso grounds, which cover Singapore's coastal defence history, then follow the coastal path.

Midday: eat at Resorts World Sentosa or at the beach bars along Siloso and Palawan. Prices on the island run higher than in the city; a hawker-style meal is cheaper back at VivoCity or in Chinatown.

Afternoon: Palawan Beach and the Palawan suspension bridge to the small southern viewpoint, then Siloso Beach for a swim or a drink. Sentosa's beaches are calm and clean but the water is a working harbour channel, so treat it as a paddle rather than a swimming destination.

Late afternoon: Imbiah Lookout for the cable car, the luge or the SkyHelix, then head back before the evening crowd. If you want the night shows at Resorts World Sentosa, check the day's schedule and stay for them.

Sentosa can be a cheap day or an expensive one, depending on how many paid attractions you add. Transport in and out is the smallest part of the budget; tickets are the largest.

Island entry by boardwalk or monorail is a few dollars, and the MRT fare from the city centre is small. Universal Studios Singapore and the aquarium are the two big-ticket items, each in the tens of dollars (2026 estimate, check current prices). The cable car, luge and SkyHelix are mid-range add-ons. Food on the island costs more than in the city's hawker centres.

Bring a card or phone: almost everywhere on Sentosa takes contactless payment, and cash is rarely needed.

For most travellers, no. Sentosa is 30 minutes from the city, and staying in the city gives you more food, more transport and easier access to the rest of Singapore. Come for the day and sleep downtown.

Stay overnight if you want a resort pool day, a spa, or an evening show and do not want the trip back. Families with young children sometimes prefer it because the beaches and attractions are on the doorstep. Book well ahead for weekends and school holidays, when island hotels fill and prices rise.
