Singapore city by district

A first visit fits in a 4 km strip north of the sea: Marina Bay and its gardens on the east, the Civic District and the river in the middle, Chinatown to the south-west, Kampong Glam and Little India to the north, Orchard Road to the north-west. The MRT joins all of them in 5–15 minutes; Sentosa, the zoo and the nature reserves are rides out.

Where’s what, as a list:

  • Marina Bay: Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, the waterfront loop. Almost no shade at noon; tower hotels are pricey. Suits: Views, first-timers with a bigger budget.
  • Civic District and Singapore River: National Gallery, Asian Civilisations Museum, Raffles Hotel, Boat Quay and Clarke Quay. Clarke Quay is loud at night. Suits: Museums, couples, riverside dinners.
  • Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar (牛车水): Temples, hawker centres, shophouse hotels, two MRT lines. Crowded evenings around Pagoda Street. Suits: Food-first trips, 2–5 nights. Price band $$.
  • Kampong Glam and Bugis (Kampung Gelam): Sultan Mosque, Haji Lane, Bugis malls; hotels with 24-hour desks and a taxi to the door. Suits: First night, late arrivals, cafés. Price band $$.
  • Little India: Loud, colourful and packed on Sunday evenings; the cheapest central hotels are here and at Farrer Park. Suits: Budget beds, curry and temples.
  • Orchard Road: Two kilometres of malls linked underground; big hotels and the Botanic Gardens at the west end. Few sights. Suits: Shopping, families, rain days.
  • Tiong Bahru: Pre-war public housing in curved Art Deco blocks, a wet market and hawker centre. One stop from Outram Park. Suits: A slow morning of cafés and 1930s flats.
  • Katong and Joo Chiat: Coloured terraces and old family restaurants in the east; the brown line (Marine Parade) reaches it since 2024. Suits: Peranakan shophouses and laksa.
  • Sentosa: Resort island with Universal Studios, beaches and the aquarium. A resort stay is its own trip; for sights, sleep in town. Suits: Families with a beach or theme-park day.
  • Geylang: Good cheap food after dark; the legal red-light lanes (odd-numbered lorongs) make budget hotels here a poor pick for families. Suits: Late-night zi char and durian.
  • Mandai and the north: 40–50 min from the centre by taxi or MRT and shuttle bus; plan a half-day or an evening. Suits: Zoo, Night Safari, Bird Paradise.
  • Jurong and the west: Housing estates and industry, 35–45 min out on the green line. Suits: Visiting friends; the Chinese and Japanese gardens.
  • Sleep area Chinatown & Tanjong Pagar: suits Food-first trips, 2–5 nights, price band $$.
  • Sleep area Kampong Glam & Bugis: suits First night, late arrivals, cafés, price band $$.
  • Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), about 17 km from the centre, 25–45 min by the usual route.
