Where to stay in Sierra Leone: best areas and types of hotel

Freetown is the only place with a wide choice of hotels, and it is the right base for a first trip: Aberdeen and Lumley put you near restaurants, the beach road and the peninsula. If the beach is the point of the trip, move out to River No. 2, Tokeh or Bureh for two or three nights instead of commuting from the city.

Outside Freetown and the peninsula, accommodation thins out fast. Bo, Makeni, Kenema and the Tiwai and Gola areas have a small number of guesthouses and camps, so book those before you build an itinerary around them.

In Freetown, Aberdeen is the traveller district: guesthouses, mid-range hotels and restaurants within walking distance of Lumley Beach. Lumley itself is spread along the beach road, quieter at night and better for beach access, but you will use taxis for everything. Central Freetown around the Cotton Tree and Siaka Stevens Street is cheaper and closer to the historic sights, though it is louder and less comfortable in the evening.

On the peninsula, River No. 2 and Tokeh have the longest-established beach lodges, from simple rooms to small resorts with pools. Bureh Beach is the surf and backpacker end, with a community lodge and basic rooms. Banana Islands add a boat crossing and a slower, more isolated stay.

Room types are straightforward: en-suite double rooms in hotels and guesthouses, self-contained apartments in Freetown for longer stays, and beach huts or tents at the lodges. Air conditioning is common in Freetown hotels and rare in beach huts, where you rely on fans and sea breeze.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a double room in the dry season. Freetown is the most expensive market because demand is concentrated there; beach lodges can be cheaper per night but meals and transfers add up.

Book Freetown hotels one to two weeks ahead in the dry season and as early as you can for Christmas, New Year and major events. Peninsula lodges have few rooms, so four to eight weeks is a sensible lead time for December to April, and longer for the peak weeks.

In the wet season (roughly May to October) you can often book days ahead and negotiate, but some beach lodges close or run reduced service. Always confirm the place is open and reachable before paying a deposit, since rain can affect the peninsula roads.

Ask about power and water: mains electricity in Freetown is intermittent, so a hotel with a generator or solar backup and a water tank is worth more than a slightly nicer room. Confirm air conditioning actually runs at night, and ask whether there is a mosquito net.

Payment is mixed. Larger Freetown hotels take cards, but many guesthouses and nearly all beach lodges prefer cash in leones or US dollars. Carry enough cash for your whole beach stay, plus a buffer for meals and boat transfers.

Location decisions interact with the rest of the trip: the airport is across the estuary at Lungi, so a Freetown base near the ferry or a hotel that arranges the crossing saves a stressful arrival day. Sort your visa, yellow-fever card and insurance before booking anything non-refundable.
