Dry season: November to April
This is the travel season. Roads to the peninsula beaches, Tiwai Island and the eastern forest hold up, boat crossings to the Banana Islands are calmer, and the hills are still green in November before the dust builds.
December to February is the strongest window. February is the pick for island trips and Tiwai; March is hotter but quieter, and the country data flags clear seas for March. January brings Harmattan haze: dry dust blown south from the Sahara, which dulls views and dries your throat, but rarely stops a trip.
December is the exception to the low-season bargain. Christmas and Boxing Day draw the diaspora home, Freetown hotels fill and beach parties run late, so book ahead and expect the year's highest prices.
Rainy season: May to October
The rains arrive in May and peak from July to September. Freetown is one of the wettest capitals in the world, with over 3 m of rain a year, and the July–September stretch brings flood and landslide risk in the city plus rough sea crossings. This is the stretch to avoid unless you have a specific reason to be there.
May, June and October sit on the edges. In May the rains start and inland roads begin to suffer; June builds toward the heavy July rain; October is still wet, with the rain easing late in the month. Expect some lodges and beach restaurants to be closed or on reduced hours in this stretch (check ahead).
If you travel in the rains, keep plans flexible, build in buffer days for road transfers, and check the forecast before any boat trip. The eastern forest and the highlands are the first places to become hard to reach.
The coast, the forest and the highlands
The Freetown Peninsula and the southern coast, including River No. 2, Bureh, the Banana Islands and Bonthe, follow the pattern above: best November to April, very wet July to September.
The eastern forest around Tiwai, Gola and Kenema is rainforest and gets wet earlier and for longer. Trails and access roads turn difficult from May, and December to April is the practical window.
The north and highlands, including Makeni, Outamba-Kilimi and the Loma Mountains, are drier savanna country. January can be hazy, March and April are hot, and the Mount Bintumani trek is best from December to March.
Holidays and crowds
Public holidays move the crowds more than the weather does. Christmas and Boxing Day are the big one: hotels in Freetown fill and prices peak. Easter and Independence Day on 27 April bring parades, lanterns and busy beaches. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are public holidays whose dates shift each year, and Mawlid is a public holiday with a date that moves yearly.
Outside those dates, Sierra Leone stays quiet even in the dry season, which is part of its appeal. Book Freetown accommodation early for the last two weeks of December and for Easter weekend.
What to pack by season
Dry season: light clothing, sun protection, a hat, and a light layer for cool, hazy January mornings in the highlands. Rainy season: a proper rain shell, quick-drying clothes, dry bags for electronics and footwear that copes with mud.
