Shawnee on Delaware

Base here 2 nights for the Delaware river and Shawnee Mountain in one stop; 1 night if you only need a bed off I-80.

Shawnee on Delaware is a small unincorporated community on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Water Gap, built around the Shawnee Inn and Shawnee Mountain ski area. It works as a low-key base for river rafting, hiking and winter skiing, and it is a short drive from Bushkill Falls and the outlet malls at Tannersville. You need a car: there is no public transport in the valley.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: there is no public transport in the valley. Taxi and van services run 24 h (numbers change, so ask at your lodging). Distances are short — the inn to the ski area is about 10 min by car — but the roads are two-lane and slow in winter.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Shawnee Inn and River Road

The resort itself, on the Delaware; walkable to the river and the golf course. Best if you want one address for everything.

Route 209 corridor

Motels and lodges strung along the highway; cheaper, but you drive to every activity.

Shawnee Mountain base

Closest beds to the ski lifts; book early for January–February weekends.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime rural area; the real risks are driving Route 209 in winter, fast water on the Delaware and unmarked trail junctions in the Gap. Tell someone your trail plan — cell coverage drops out.
  • No public transport: without a car you are dependent on taxis and rideshare, which can be thin late at night.
  • Winter storms close or ice Route 209 and the ski access road: check conditions before driving.
  • River activities run on seasonal schedules and can be cancelled by high water: confirm the day before.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in the valley and along the Gap trails.
