Best areas to stay in Shanghai by traveller type

Shanghai is big and the metro is fast, so the right base is the one that matches your days, not the one with the best view. If you have two or three days and want the classic sights on foot, stay near the Bund or People's Square: the riverfront, Nanjing Road and the museum cluster sit close together, and Line 2 is the usual route to both airports and the main rail stations (check current routes and walking times).

Families and anyone staying four nights or more usually do better in Jing'an. Streets are calmer, there are parks and malls for rainy afternoons, and several lines cross the city from there (check which lines serve your hotel). Couples and nightlife-focused travellers gravitate to the former French Concession lanes around Xintiandi and Fuxing Park, where bars, cafés and plane-tree streets sit together.

If price decides, look at the ring around Shanghai Railway Station and Hongqiao. Rooms cost less and the metro still works, but you add time each way to the Bund (check your route). For a one-night transit stop, a hotel on Line 2 near Longyang Road or Century Avenue keeps the Maglev and Pudong airport close (check).
