Choosing your window, step by step
First, decide what you want to do. Cities and food: April to June or September to October. Hiking and mountain villages: June to September. Skiing: late December to March on Kopaonik. River clubs and festival nights: June to September.
- Check whether Orthodox Easter falls in your month — it moves each year and fills buses and trains for a four-day weekend.
- Check festival dates before booking: EXIT and Guča fall in the summer season and draw regional crowds to Novi Sad and the south.
- If you want the cheapest flights and rooms, aim for January or February outside the holidays, or October and November. December is medium-price because of New Year.
- If you want heat but not 40 °C, take the mountains in July and August and keep Belgrade for the evenings.

What changes month to month
Weather is regional, not national. The Pannonian plain — Belgrade, Novi Sad, Subotica — is continental: cold, foggy winters and summer heatwaves near 40 °C, with the košava wind blowing hard in winter. Central and southern Serbia around Niš and Kragujevac runs slightly warmer, and the vineyards harvest in September. The mountains — Zlatibor, Tara, Kopaonik — stay cool in summer and hold snow through the winter.
- Winter fog is common in the plains; allow slack in connections if you are travelling through (check current conditions).
- July and August afternoons on the plains are for indoor museums, long lunches and late river evenings.
- November and December are for city breaks only; mountain roads can be icy (check before driving).
