Best day trips from Seattle: how to get there and what to see

Seattle sits between water and mountains, so a day trip is usually one of three shapes: a ferry ride to an island town, a drive to a waterfall or alpine trailhead, or a longer run to a themed town. Bainbridge Island is the lowest-effort option: walk onto the ferry at Colman Dock, cross in about 35 minutes, and you are in a small town with cafés, a waterfront park and a trail network. It works in any weather and needs no car. Bremerton is the same ferry line with a longer crossing.

Snoqualmie Falls is a short drive east on I-90 and gives you a big waterfall with an easy viewing platform and a lower trail. It pairs well with a stop in the town of Snoqualmie or a half-day at North Bend.

Mount Rainier is the classic mountain day. Paradise has the main visitor centre and the best-known trails; Sunrise is another option on the northeast side. Summer weekends fill the parking lots early, and the park has used timed-entry reservations in peak season, so check before driving.

Leavenworth is a Bavarian-themed town in the Cascades, about 2.5 hours east. It is a long day but doable if you leave early; many travellers prefer to stay overnight. The San Juan Islands need a ferry from Anacortes and are better as an overnight, though a long day trip to Friday Harbor is possible if you drive to the terminal early.

Ferry fares are set by Washington State Ferries and depend on route and whether you walk on or bring a vehicle; walk-on passengers pay per person, cars pay by length. Park entrance at Mount Rainier is a per-vehicle fee. Train fares on Amtrak Cascades and Sounder vary by route and how far ahead you book.

Dress in layers. Seattle weather changes fast, and the mountains are cooler and wetter than the city even in summer. Carry water and a rain shell.
