Seattle airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Four realistic ways into the city. The train wins on cost and predictability; a car wins on door-to-door speed for groups and late arrivals.

The Sea-Tac Airport station sits at the north end of the terminal complex, reachable by a covered walkway and a short ride on the airport people mover from the main terminal. Trains run north through Tukwila, the Rainier Valley and the stadium district before reaching downtown stations such as Pioneer Square, University Street, Westlake and Capitol Hill. Journey time to Westlake is about 35–40 minutes.

Fares are distance-based and cheap by US standards: roughly US$3 for the airport-to-downtown trip, 2026 estimate. You can tap a contactless bank card or phone at the gate, or buy and load an ORCA card; machines at the station take cards. Trains run from early morning until around 01:00, with a long overnight gap, so a very late landing usually means a car or a night near the airport.

The line is the right choice if your hotel is downtown, in Capitol Hill or near a station. It is the wrong choice if you are staying in Bellevue, Renton or a suburban hotel with no easy bus link, where the transfer time eats the saving.

Taxis wait on the third floor of the airport parking garage, signed from the terminal. Expect a metered fare of roughly US$40–60 to downtown, plus a tip of 15–20%, and 25–40 minutes depending on traffic. Flat-rate and shared-ride options exist; confirm the price before you get in.

Uber and Lyft pick up in the same garage area, with in-app directions to the assigned zone. Fares track taxis in normal conditions and rise at peak times, during big events and in bad weather. Both are the simplest option after the last train, when the terminal is still busy but the rail line has stopped.

For Bellevue, Renton or the eastern suburbs, a car is usually faster than rail plus a bus, but the fare climbs with distance. Check the estimate in the app before you commit.

All figures are 2026 estimates and exclude tips unless stated. Rail fares are the one genuinely cheap option; everything else is a US$40-plus decision.

Decide before you land. If you arrive before about 23:00 and your hotel is downtown, the train is the low-risk choice. If you land after the last train, book a car or an airport hotel rather than gambling on a connection.

Traffic is the variable. Weekday 07:00–09:30 and 15:30–18:30 can double a taxi time; the train is unaffected. Rain slows everything further from October to April.

Tipping is expected on taxis and ride-hailing, 15–20%, usually added in the app. Baggage handling at hotels runs US$2–5 a bag. A rental car makes sense only if you are leaving the city; downtown parking is expensive and the light rail covers the main sights.
