Scheveningen is the seaside district of The Hague — a fishing harbour, a former fishing village and a beach resort in one, about 5 km from the city centre. It is not a town you need to base a Netherlands trip on: most visitors ride tram 1 or 9 out for an afternoon, eat fish at the harbour and return to The Hague for the night. Sleep here only if you want the beach at dawn or the beach-club nightlife.

Safety

Scheveningen is a safe, well-lit resort; the real risks are cold water, strong currents on windy days, crowded trams in summer and overpriced beach-club bills — agree the total before you order.
  • Summer weekends and warm days: the promenade and pier get very crowded.
  • North Sea water stays cold even in August; there are no lifeguard flags everywhere — check before swimming.
  • Beach-club drinks are priced for the view; ask before ordering.
  • Bikes and scooters share the promenade paths — keep right and watch crossings.
