Airports in Saudi Arabia: which one to fly into

Saudi Arabia's airports split into three jobs: the two big international gateways (Riyadh and Jeddah), the pilgrim and regional airports (Madinah, Dammam, Ta'if and others), and seasonal leisure airports such as AlUla. Almost every long-haul flight from the US, UK, Canada or Australia lands at RUH or JED, often via a Gulf hub; from there a domestic hop on Saudia, flynas, flyadeal or Riyadh Air (from 2025–26) reaches the rest of the country in under two hours.

Riyadh (RUH) is the default for a first trip. The airport sits about 35 km north of the centre; a car takes 45–80 minutes to Olaya depending on traffic, and the Riyadh Metro Yellow Line now runs to the airport, with a 2-hour Darb fare around SAR 4. Riyadh is the base for Diriyah, the National Museum and the old centre, and it has the densest domestic network, so it is the easiest place to start a multi-stop trip.

Jeddah (JED) suits the Red Sea, Al-Balad and the Haramain High-Speed Rail. Terminal 1 handles most international traffic and the airport has its own Haramain station, so you can land and be on a 300 km/h train toward Madinah without crossing the city. Al-Balad is 30–45 minutes away by car. Note that non-Muslims may ride the Haramain line to Jeddah, KAEC and Madinah but must not travel to Makkah station.

Madinah (MED) is the northern pilgrim gateway, with a Haramain rail link to Jeddah and Makkah. Dammam (DMM) serves the Eastern Province — Khobar is about an hour by car — and pairs with the SAR East train line from Riyadh via Hofuf. AlUla (ULH) takes seasonal international flights and is 20–30 minutes from AlUla town; when those flights do not match your dates, fly to Riyadh or Jeddah and connect domestically instead.

Domestic flights are the default between regions: roughly 1 h 45 in the air and about 4 h door to door, SAR 250–700 one way. Low-cost fares usually exclude checked bags, and seats near Ramadan, Eid and Hajj sell out early, so book those legs with the rest of the trip rather than on arrival.

Book the domestic leg with your international ticket where you can. A missed connection on a separate low-cost booking is your problem, and holiday-period seats are the first to go.

Arrive with the eVisa already approved on the official portal, and keep a printed or offline copy. Airlines check it at check-in, not just at immigration.

Ride-hailing (Uber, Careem, Jeeny, Bolt) gives a fixed quote and works all night; airport pickups add a fee and surge pricing hits after big events and at the end of prayer times. At RUH the metro is the cheap alternative if your hotel is near a station.

Expect prayer-time closures of 20–30 minutes at shops and cafés, a long afternoon break in souqs, and shifted hours across Ramadan. Friday midday is the quietest slot of the week.
