Weather by zone
São Tomé and Príncipe is small but the rain is not evenly spread. The north and east of São Tomé — the capital, Guadalupe, Lagoa Azul — sit in a rain shadow and stay drier and sunnier. The south and west, including Porto Alegre, Ribeira Peixe and the Obo forest around Pico Cão Grande, are among the wettest places in Africa, with several metres of rain a year; even in the dry season expect showers.
Príncipe is hot and humid year-round, with the north around Santo António and Bom Bom drier than the forested south. The gravana from June to September is cooler and often cloudy-bright rather than clear, which keeps walking comfortable. The gravanito is a shorter dry spell around December and January.

The gravana is peak season for walkers, and August is the tightest month: diaspora holidays fill flights and rooms, so prices are at their highest. December is the other expensive month, driven by Christmas visits and turtle season. June, July and September give you the same dry weather with medium crowds and medium prices.
March to May and October to November are the low season, with the fewest visitors and the lowest price band. They are also the wettest months, with slippery forest trails and slower roads to the south. December is the exception in the wet half of the year: it stays in the high price band because of Christmas and turtle season. If your trip is mostly beaches and roça stays rather than trekking, the shoulder months can still work; if you are here for Obo or Pico Cão Grande, pay for the dry season.
