Romantic things to do in San Francisco

San Francisco rewards couples who pick two or three things and walk between them. The city is small — about 11 km north to south — and the romantic moments are mostly outdoors and mostly free: a bridge walk, a coastal path, a hilltop at dusk. Pay for the cable car, a good dinner and maybe a boat.

Start with the Golden Gate Bridge. Walk the east sidewalk from the welcome centre toward the first tower and back; that is roughly 3 km round trip and 30–45 minutes at an easy pace. Wind is constant, so bring a layer. The sidewalk is open during daylight hours; the bridge authority posts occasional closures.

Second, the Powell-Hyde cable car from Market Street over Nob Hill to Fisherman's Wharf. Sit on the outside bench, stand on the running board if you are steady, and ride it at dusk when the bay lights come on. Buy a single ride or a day pass on the Muni app or at the turnaround; queues at Powell and Market can run 45–60 minutes in summer, so board at the Hyde Street end instead.

Third, Lands End and the Sutro Baths ruins: a cliff path with ocean views, about 5 km one way from the Cliff House area, free, and quietest before 10am. Finish with a drink in North Beach or a shared plate in Chinatown.

These picks cluster in three areas, which keeps a romantic evening short on transit. The northern waterfront holds the bridge, Crissy Field, the cable car terminus and Pier 33 for Alcatraz. The western edge holds Lands End and the Sutro Baths. The centre holds Twin Peaks, North Beach and the Ferry Building.

Layer up. Even in September the bridge and Lands End run 5–10 °C cooler than downtown, and the wind is the thing couples remember. A light jacket and closed shoes beat a dress-and-heels plan for anything outdoors.

Book the two things that sell out: Alcatraz night ferries and a table at a North Beach or Mission restaurant on a Friday or Saturday. Everything else here can be done on the day. For dinner, expect US$30–60 per person before drinks in the city (2026 estimate); a shared Chinatown or taqueria meal can come in under US$25 each.

Getting around: Muni buses, Metro and the cable car use the same fare system, and a day pass pays off if you take three or more rides. Rideshares are easy but surge at dinner time. Parking near the bridge and Twin Peaks is limited and break-ins happen, so leave nothing visible in a car.

September and October are the best months for a romantic trip: the warmest, clearest weather of the year and the least fog. May and June are cooler and often grey. July and August bring the fog that swallows the bridge by mid-afternoon, though mornings can still be clear.

Time of day matters as much as month. The bridge and Twin Peaks are best in the hour before sunset or before 9am. The cable car is best at dusk. Lands End is best early, before the tour groups and the wind.

Weekdays are quieter everywhere. If you are here for a proposal or an anniversary dinner, book the restaurant first and build the walk around it, and have a fog backup ready.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is about 21 km south of downtown; BART runs from the airport to the city in roughly 30 minutes, and a rideshare takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic. Oakland (OAK) is across the bay and reachable by BART too.

Once in the city you do not need a car for these picks. Muni and BART cover the waterfront, the cable car covers the hills, and the rest is walking.
