San Francisco in October: what to expect

October is often described as one of the better weather months on the California coast: the marine layer that keeps San Francisco grey in July and August tends to weaken, so afternoons can be warmer and clearer than in mid-summer. Treat the numbers below as check — they are typical figures, not confirmed climate normals for the city.

Rain is usually still limited, with the wet season generally beginning in November, but the first storm of the year can arrive late in the month. Fog is not gone, just often less frequent: the west side (Ocean Beach, the Outer Sunset) and the Golden Gate Bridge can still be grey while the Mission and downtown are clear. Microclimates are the rule, so check the forecast for the specific neighbourhood you are heading to, not just "San Francisco".

Wildfire smoke from elsewhere in California is a real autumn wildcard: September and October are peak fire months in the state, and smoke can push air quality into unhealthy ranges for a few days.
