Things to do in San Diego with kids: best attractions and family tips

San Diego is one of the few US cities where a family can fill a week without a car. Downtown, the airport and Balboa Park sit close together, and the trolley plus short rideshares cover most of it. Add a car only for Legoland, the Safari Park and the northern beaches.

Start with San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park: it is the city's signature attraction and easily a full day. The same park holds a cluster of family museums, gardens and the Spanish Village art studios, so a rainy morning can turn into an afternoon outside without moving the car.

For water, Mission Bay is calm and shallow, good for small children, while La Jolla Shores and the Children's Pool give you seals, sea lions and snorkelling. SeaWorld and Legoland are the two big paid parks; both need most of a day and both are cheaper booked online in advance.

Most family sights sit in three clusters. Downtown and the waterfront hold the USS Midway, the Maritime Museum and the ferry to Coronado. Balboa Park, just north-east of downtown, holds the zoo and the museums. Mission Bay and the beaches — Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla — run north along the coast.

Legoland and the Safari Park are the two outliers: Carlsbad is about 45 minutes north by car, and the Safari Park is about 45 minutes north-east in Escondido. Both are day trips, not add-ons to a downtown morning.

San Diego is a car city outside the centre, but you can skip the rental for two or three days if you stay downtown or near Balboa Park. Parking at the zoo and the beaches fills early in summer; arrive before 10am or use the trolley and rideshare.

Sun is stronger than the temperature suggests, even in June when coastal cloud can sit until midday. Bring hats, refillable bottles and reef-safe sunscreen. The ocean stays cool — around 18–20 °C in summer — so most kids swim briefly and then play on the sand.

Food is easy with children: fish tacos, burgers and Mexican food are everywhere, and most restaurants have high chairs. Balboa Park and Mission Bay both have lawns for picnics, which cuts the cost of a day out.

April to June and September to October give the best balance: mild days around 20–24 °C, thinner crowds and lower hotel rates than midsummer. July and August are the busiest and warmest, with coastal cloud in the mornings and sun by afternoon.

Winter is quiet and cheap, and still mild enough for the beach and the zoo, though the ocean is cold. School holidays — late June to early August, Thanksgiving and the December break — push prices and queues up at the zoo and the theme parks.
