The trips in detail
New Braunfels and Gruene are the easiest half day. New Braunfels has the Comal River and a compact old town; Gruene, just north, is a small historic district with a dance hall and river access. Both are close enough that you can leave after breakfast and be back for dinner.
Austin is the one trip that works without a car.
