Downtown and the River Walk put the Alamo, the river bend, the Spanish Governor's Palace and the main restaurant strips within a 15-minute walk. River-level hotels are the quietest and the most expensive; street-level blocks near Commerce Street and the convention centre are cheaper but louder. If you are here for two or three nights without a car, this is the area that saves you the most time.
Pearl sits north of downtown on the river's museum reach, on the site of the old Pearl Brewery. It is calmer, has good food and a Saturday market, and connects to downtown by river barge, bus or a 10–15 minute rideshare. Southtown and King William, south of downtown, mix restored houses, galleries and bars; evenings are quiet and you will rely on rideshares after about 22:00.

Decide first whether you will have a car. Without one, downtown is the only area where you can do the main sights on foot, and the missions are reachable by bus or a short rideshare. With a car, Pearl, Southtown and the airport corridor all open up and parking becomes the main cost.
Ask about river-level versus street-level rooms: river-level is quieter but you may hear barges and music until late. Check whether your hotel charges a resort or amenity fee on top of the room rate, which is common near the River Walk.
