Samarkand is a dry, continental city: hot summers, cold winters, and two reliable windows in between. The table below is the short version; the notes after it explain what each season changes about your day.
Spring and autumn are the months people plan trips around. Summer is workable if you start at dawn and treat the middle of the day as indoor time. Winter is for cheap hotel rates, empty monuments and short daylight.

Spring and autumn: the two windows
April and May bring green fields, mild days and the year's heaviest tour-group traffic. September and October repeat the weather with a different backdrop: melon and grape season, and the heat breaking in the first half of September. Both windows are the right answer for a first trip, and both mean booking intercity trains and old-town hotels well ahead.
Autumn evenings cool down quickly, so pack a layer for the evening walk between the Registan and the bazaar. Spring can still throw a cold, wet day, especially in March.
Summer: hot, cheap and quiet
July and August are the hottest months, with highs around 40 °C in the oasis cities. That is not a reason to skip Samarkand, but it changes the shape of the day: see the Registan and Shah-i-Zinda at opening, rest indoors through the afternoon, and come back out for the evening. Hotels discount, and the monuments are far less crowded than in spring.
June is the transition month: still hot by the end, but more comfortable than July. Carry water, use a hat, and plan museum or craft-workshop time for the middle of the day.
Winter: cold, grey and cheap
December to February is cold, with frost at night and occasional snow on the Registan — a genuinely different photograph from the summer postcard. Days are short, some courtyard guesthouses are cold, and a few seasonal businesses close. In exchange, prices are at their lowest and you can have the big sights almost to yourself.
If you travel in winter, choose a hotel with reliable heating and check that it stays staffed for a late arrival. New Year brings domestic travel and full trains around Tashkent.
Events and holidays that move the calendar
Navruz on 21 March is the one date that can make or break a spring trip: several days off, festivals in every city, and trains that sell out. Book transport and accommodation weeks ahead if your dates overlap.
Other public holidays matter less for sightseeing but affect transport: Independence Day on 1 September creates a long weekend, and the lunar Eid holidays (Ramazan Hayit around 9–11 March 2027, Kurban Hayit around 16–17 May 2027 — check) send families travelling between cities.

Practical tips
Pick your window by what you want to do, not just by temperature. Spring and autumn suit long walking days between the Registan, Gur-e-Amir and Shah-i-Zinda. Summer suits early starts and a slower afternoon. Winter suits museums, hammams and low prices.
Whatever the month, book the fast train as soon as your dates are fixed, and confirm your arrival plan before you land — a late arrival at Samarkand airport is easier with a transfer arranged in advance.
