Samarkand airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Samarkand's airport is small and close to town, so the transfer is short and cheap. The choice is mostly about how much you want to pay for certainty: an app fare you can see before you get in, a negotiated street fare, or the bus if you are on a tight budget and travelling light.

Prices below are 2026 estimates in som. Traffic is rarely heavy outside the morning and evening peaks, but the airport road can slow when a flight lands.

Yandex Go works in Samarkand and shows the fare before you accept, which removes the main argument at the kerb. Order after you clear arrivals and note the car plate; drivers usually wait at the short-stay area outside the terminal. If the app shows no cars, walk to the taxi rank and agree a price in som before loading bags.

Street drivers at Uzbek airports quote high to anyone who looks new to the country. A reasonable opening offer is around UZS 40,000 to the Registan area; expect to settle somewhere between that and UZS 80,000. Pay in cash and keep small notes — change for a large bill is a common problem.

Ask to be dropped at a landmark your hotel can name, such as the Registan or Bibi-Khanym, rather than a street address; many small guesthouses sit in lanes that drivers will not hunt through.

City buses and marshrutkas run along the airport road into town and cost UZS 2,000–5,000. They are frequent in daylight, crowded at peak times, and carry no English signage — use Yandex Maps or 2GIS to match the route number on the windscreen. Pay the driver or conductor in cash on board.

This is a good option if you land in the morning, have a small bag and are staying near a main road. It is a poor option after dark or with luggage, when the walk from the stop to a guesthouse in the old town adds 10–20 minutes you will not enjoy.

There is no railway station at Samarkand airport, so you cannot step off a plane and onto an Afrosiyob. The high-speed trains to Tashkent (about 2 h 10) and Bukhara (about 1 h 40) leave from Samarkand's city station, a short taxi ride from the centre and a separate trip from the airport.

If your plan is to fly in and immediately continue by rail, allow at least two hours between landing and departure, and buy the train ticket in advance: Afrosiyob services sell out days ahead in spring and autumn, and the passport name on the ticket must match the one you travel on. Buy at railway.uz or the official app.

A private car into the centre is the single biggest line here and still small: budget UZS 40,000–80,000 (about US$3–6) for an app car, more if you accept a kerb price without bargaining. Buses cost less than a coffee. Hotel transfers are the priciest and the least stressful after a night flight.

Add a little for the last leg: if your guesthouse is deep in the old town, a driver may ask for a small extra to thread the lanes, or you may walk the final few minutes.

Sort out two things before you fly. First, cash: airport exchange counters and ATMs exist but can be shut or empty at night, so arrive with a small amount of som or a card that works in Uzbek ATMs. Second, your door: if you land after midnight, message the hotel or guesthouse to confirm someone will be there, because a locked gate in an old-town lane is the one real failure point of a Samarkand arrival.

A local eSIM set up before departure means the app car, the map and the hotel message all work the moment you switch off flight mode. Without data, you are negotiating blind at the kerb.
