Weather in March
March is the transition month in the Salt Lake Valley: mornings still start near freezing, afternoons often reach the low teens, and the snow line moves up the Wasatch through the month. The valley itself sees more rain than snow by late March, while the Cottonwood canyons — Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude — usually keep their best snowpack of the year.
The mountains are a different climate. At 2,500–3,000 m, resort bases can hold 2–3 m of settled snow in March, and storm cycles still deliver. That is why March is one of the strongest ski months here even though the city feels like spring. If your trip is city-only, expect a jacket in the morning and a light layer by 3pm.

Crowds and prices
March sits between the Christmas–Presidents' Day ski peak and the spring hiking season, so hotel rates in the city are usually lower than in January or February. The exception is the last two weeks, when US school spring breaks start and both resorts and airport traffic pick up.
On the mountain, weekends and powder days are busy; midweek lift lines are short. Downtown Salt Lake City stays quiet on weeknights, and restaurant reservations are rarely needed outside Friday and Saturday.
If you are skiing, book lift tickets and rentals online in advance — walk-up window prices are the most expensive way to buy. If you are city-only, you can often book hotels a few weeks out without much risk.

What's on in March
March is a sports month more than a festival month. The Utah Jazz play home games at the Delta Center through the NBA regular season, and Real Salt Lake usually opens its MLS home schedule at America First Field in Sandy in March. Both are easy to combine with a city stay.

Where to go in March
Skiers should base in the valley and drive up: Big Cottonwood Canyon (Brighton, Solitude) and Little Cottonwood Canyon (Alta, Snowbird) are both within about 30–45 minutes of downtown, traffic and weather permitting. Park City is about 40 minutes east and has its own resort and historic main street.
For non-skiers, the city itself works well: Temple Square and the Utah State Capitol, the Natural History Museum of Utah up by the University of Utah, and the Clark Planetarium and Discovery Gateway downtown. Antelope Island State Park, about an hour north on the Great Salt Lake, is good for bison, birds and views in cooler weather.
Hiking in the foothills is possible on lower trails in late March, but expect mud, ice patches and closed upper trails. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail and City Creek Canyon are the usual early-season options.
