Salt Lake City in April: what to expect

April is a transition month in the Salt Lake Valley. Snow in the city is possible early in the month but rare by the end; most days are dry, breezy and bright, with a few wet spells that can arrive as rain downtown and snow at higher elevations. The valley floor sits around 1,300 m, so mornings stay cold and afternoons warm quickly.

The mountains are a different season. Wasatch resorts typically keep lifts running into mid- or late April, and trails above the valley — Grandeur Peak, Mount Olympus, the upper Millcreek and Big Cottonwood canyons — usually hold snow well into May. Plan valley walks and foothill paths rather than high alpine hikes.

April is shoulder season in Salt Lake City: medium crowds and medium prices, noticeably below the July peak and the December ski holidays. Downtown hotel rates are usually lower than in winter, though a large convention or an Easter weekend can fill blocks and push rates up for a few nights.

Ski resorts are the exception. Late-season skiing keeps some lodges near the canyons busy, and a fresh April storm can bring weekend traffic up the canyons. Book canyon accommodation early if you plan to ski; book downtown hotels a few weeks out otherwise.

April is a light month for fixed city events, so the calendar is dominated by Easter (date varies), the end of the ski season in the Wasatch, and the start of the farmers-market and outdoor season. Confirm dates locally before you build a trip around any single event.

Stay in the valley for the reliable weather. Temple Square and the downtown core, the Utah State Capitol grounds, Memory Grove and City Creek Canyon are all walkable and pleasant once the afternoon warms up. The Great Salt Lake shoreline and Antelope Island State Park are at their best before the summer bugs arrive, though wind can be strong.

For foothills, the Bonneville Shoreline Trail and lower City Creek and Millcreek trails usually dry out by mid-April. Save the high Wasatch hikes for May or June. If you want snow, the resorts are still the draw; if you want red rock, the desert parks are a long drive south and better in March or October.

Pack for two seasons in one day: a warm mid-layer and a windproof shell for mornings and evenings, plus a T-shirt for sunny afternoons. Waterproof shoes help on muddy foothill trails, and sunglasses and sunscreen matter at this altitude even when it is cool.

If you are skiing, bring or rent proper snow gear; valley clothing is not enough on the mountain. A refillable bottle is useful — the air is dry and you will drink more than you expect.

March is colder and snowier, with better skiing but less reliable valley walking. May is warmer and greener, with most foothill trails open and the high country starting to melt out. June opens the alpine season but brings higher prices and bigger crowds.

Go in April if you want mild, walkable city days, lower hotel rates than summer, and the chance of a last ski day in the Wasatch. Skip April if your plan depends on high alpine hiking, guaranteed dry weather, or a specific festival — the calendar is thin and the mountains are still in winter mode.
