Salina Cruz
Skip as a base: use Salina Cruz for one night as a bus or surf transfer, or 3–4 nights at a Punta Conejo surf camp outside town.
Salina Cruz is a working oil and container port on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the Pacific end of Mexico's narrowest crossing. There is little sightseeing: a malecón, a plaza and a lighthouse bluff. Its real use is transport — buses along the Oaxaca coast and the Tren Interoceánico to Coatzacoalcos — plus surf camps east of town near Punta Conejo.

Get around
The city is spread out and hot; use taxis or ride-hailing rather than walking between districts. Taxi sitios sit near the Zócalo and hotels call radio taxis. Bus terminals are scattered along the MEX-185 highway into town, so check which terminal your company uses before you book a departure.

Scams and watch-outs
- Bus terminals are not centralised: ADO/OCC and Sur use different sites on the highway edge of town — confirm yours the day before.
- Tren Interoceánico passenger service to Coatzacoalcos has been suspended after a derailment, with resumption expected in 2027: check before planning around it.
- May–Oct is hurricane season on this coast; storms can cancel buses and close roads.
- Surf near Punta Conejo is for experienced surfers; rocks and strong currents, no lifeguards on the outer breaks.
- The port and refinery area is industrial; there is no beach-resort strip in the city itself.
Salina Cruz is a working port, not a resort: petty theft and heat are the everyday risks, and the outer surf breaks have no lifeguards. Keep to lit central streets at night and use taxis after dark.
