Where to stay in Saint Kitts and Nevis: best areas and types of hotel

For a first trip, stay on both islands rather than commuting: 4 nights on St Kitts and 3 on Nevis, with one base on each. On St Kitts, Frigate Bay suits resort stays and restaurant choice, the south-east peninsula suits beach time, and Basseterre works for one night near the ferry. On Nevis, Pinney's Beach and the Charlestown area cover most stays. The ferry takes about 45 minutes, so day-tripping with luggage is wasted time.

Use this to pick a base before you compare specific hotels. Distances are short: the whole of St Kitts is roughly 37 km long, and Nevis is smaller still.

Frigate Bay is the default for a resort trip: it sits on the isthmus between the Atlantic and Caribbean sides, close to Basseterre and with the densest cluster of hotels and restaurants on the island. The Caribbean side is calmer for swimming; the Atlantic side has more wind and surf.

The south-east peninsula, running towards the tip of the island, holds the beaches most visitors come for and a thinner spread of places to stay. It suits travellers with a car who want beach time over nightlife. Basseterre itself is a working capital: useful for one night near the ferry terminal and the museum, not a beach base.

Cruise-ship days change the feel of Basseterre and Frigate Bay, with more traffic and busier restaurants. Check the port schedule if that matters to you (check).

Nevis is the slower half of the federation. Pinney's Beach, just north of Charlestown, is the main strip: a long stretch of sand with inns, small hotels and beach bars, and the ferry terminal a short drive away. Charlestown itself is small and walkable, with the market and the birth house of Alexander Hamilton.

Further from the beach, plantation-style and hillside properties sit in the green interior below Nevis Peak, often with views and more space. They trade beach access for quiet and usually need a car or taxi for everything. Nevis has fewer rooms than St Kitts, so peak-season availability tightens first here.

Rooms range from guesthouses and small inns to full resorts, with a cluster of plantation-style properties on Nevis. Rates move a lot by season: December to April is peak, and June to November is hurricane season, when prices fall and some smaller places close for part of the period.

Treat the figures below as 2026 estimates for a double room per night, before taxes and the accommodation levy. Confirm the total at booking, since island hotels often quote before tax.

For December to April, book two to three months ahead, and earlier for the Christmas and New Year weeks, when the best rooms on both islands sell out. Nevis has fewer beds, so its peak dates go first.

For June to November, you can often book weeks ahead and pay much less, but check that your chosen property is open and that your travel insurance covers hurricane-season disruption. Shoulder months around May and early December often give the best balance of weather and price.

Both islands drive on the left and require a local driving permit, which is usually arranged through your car-rental company. If you plan to move between beaches and restaurants, a car changes the trip; without one, pick a base within walking distance of what you need.
