Best time to visit Saint Kitts and Nevis: weather and seasons by month

Both islands share one climate: coastal temperatures sit around 25–31 °C all year, with the trade winds doing most of the work. What changes is rain, storm risk, crowds and price. St Kitts has a rainforest core around Mt Liamuiga; Nevis is a single volcanic cone that collects cloud on the peak most afternoons.

Use the table as a shortlist, then check flight and ferry dates before you commit.

This is the window most visitors want. Rain is short and scattered, humidity is lower, and the trade winds keep the coast comfortable. It is also the only reliable time for the things people come for: hiking Mt Liamuiga or Nevis Peak without a soaked trail, and boat or snorkel days on the south-east peninsula.

The cost is crowds and price. February is the busiest month, with cruise ships in Basseterre most days, and late December to early January is peak pricing on top of Sugar Mas. If you want the dry season without the crush, aim for May: the parent country data rates it go, low crowd, medium price, with calm seas for the ferry between the islands.

Book 2–3 months ahead for January–April, and earlier for festival dates or if you want a specific inn on Nevis.

Hurricane season runs roughly June to November, with September the peak month in this part of the Caribbean. August to October is the cheapest window, but you are trading certainty for price. Some hotels and restaurants close for part of the season and reopen late October; ferries and inter-island crossings can be disrupted. If you travel then, buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption, keep dates flexible, and watch the National Hurricane Center outlook in the week before you fly.

November is the pivot: the season restarts, cruise ships return, and conditions are usually back to good without December prices.

Two carnivals bookend the year. Sugar Mas on St Kitts runs from late November to 2 January, with J'ouvert and parades in Basseterre; the finale lands on New Year and Carnival Day, 1–2 January. On Nevis, Culturama and Emancipation Day fall in late July to early August, and ferries get busy.

Other dates to plan around: Good Friday and Easter Monday in March or April (closures), Labour Day on the first Monday of May, Whit Monday in May or June, National Heroes Day on 16 September and Independence Day on 19 September, and Christmas with Boxing Day on 25–26 December, when prices peak.

Pack for heat and rain at the same time: light clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, a rain shell for the rainforest core and for Nevis Peak, and sturdy shoes if you plan to hike. Mosquito repellent matters more after rain, and the islands are small enough that you rarely need more than one base each.

The ferry between St Kitts and Nevis is the main planning constraint. Crossings take about 45 minutes, and the Narrows can be choppy in the winter trade winds — if you are prone to seasickness, take an earlier crossing and sit outside.
