Safranbolu

Safranbolu is a UNESCO-listed Ottoman merchant town about 200 km north of Ankara and 100 km inland from the Black Sea, with a population of roughly 53,000. Its old quarter, Çarşı, sits in a sheltered gully and holds restored 18th- and 19th-century konaks, a caravanserai, a covered bazaar and two hamams. It is compact, walkable and cheap, and it works as a one-night stop between Ankara and the Black Sea coast or as a quiet weekend from Istanbul.
